It's no secret; jobs are scarce....Especially for veterans. There are an estimated 1 million men and women leaving the military within the next 5 years, and almost all of them will need jobs. That's where GM comes in. GM and the GM Foundation are helping to pay for job fairs all across the country that are aimed at finding meaningful employment for returning veterans.
The two organizations are contributing $250,000 to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Chamber Foundation's Hiring our Heroes program. Hiring our Heroes is a grassroots effort to find jobs for returning veterans and their spouses, many of whom have put their own careers on hold because of long separations and overseas deployments due to military service.
Thanks to Hiring Our Heroes more than 9,500 veterans and spouses have found jobs. This year, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will hold 400 hiring fairs this year. The goal is to find jobs for 500,000 veterans by the end of 2014.
In addition to the contribution, GM is also currently recruiting qualified veterans to fill salaried and hourly job vacancies and is encouraging its network of suppliers and dealers to do the same. In a June 19th letter to all dealers and suppliers, GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson urged them to support Hiring Our Heroes by considering to vets for open positions.
