There are miles...and then there are Seth miles: The grueling road tests of the 2012 Sonic.

Last updated 5 years ago

5,280 feet. That's how many feet are in a mile. However, a Seth mile is much more excruciating. A Seth mile is more extreme, more grueling, more punishing. The term Seth mile comes from the Sonic's Quality Manager Seth Valentine. Engineers coined the term "Seth mile" because of his reputation for extreme testing on long road trips. Valentine takes his job (to make sonic the most reliable and durable small car in North America) very seriously.

Over a six week period after the first Sonic was produced, Valentine drove it more than 14,000 miles. He drove through the deserts of Arizona, the Rocky Mountains, the low country in South Carolina. Seth drove everywhere. He even routinely packed his family up for road trips and vacations and took the Sonic.

Valentine used this time to identify quality issues that had to be fixed before the cars ever actually saw a single consumer. Here's one example of what Valentine fixed...before he even got the first Sonic home to Phoenix: While traveling through a Texas crosswind, he noticed an intense wind noise that was not detected during testing as 40 mph crosswinds typically aren't test factors. Valentine called the Orion plant and had the problem fixed before VIN #2 left the line.

"I do test drives because I want to experience everything a customer could: low altitude, high altitude, high temperatures and low temperatures. In the course of one week I can go from below sea level at 120 degrees F to below freezing temperatures at 12,000 feet above sea level. We can experience everything the customer might experience." Said Valentine when he asked why he was so hard on Sonic.

In addition to Valentine's hard work, Sonic owners will also receive a 100,000-mile powertain warranty, 40,000 miles more than most competitors.

Stop in today and find out for yourself why Sonic is not only one of the most fuel efficient cars on the Market, but also one of the most reliable. Take a look at what a product specialist had to say about the Sonic at the 2012 Pittsburgh Auto Show!
