In 2011, the Regal had a long list of accolades, including outselling both the Audi A4 and the Acura TSX, being named "Best Uscale Midsize Car for Families" and Best car for the Money". In 2012, Buick looked to continue to provide the most luxurious and economical vehicle at the lowest price possible by making some major changes to the Regal's drivetrain.
The 2012 Buick Regal GS will now feature a six-speed, Aisin AF40 automatic tranmission specifically calibrated for Buick. This transmission will allow the 270HP, turbocharged Ecotec to still be high performance, with a 0-60 mph speed of 6.7 seconds, matching it's manual relative. US SRVP of Buick Marketing Tony DiSalle said "With the Regal GS, we made a conscious decision to go against the current trend and give enthusiasts the manual transmission they desire as standard equipment. Adding an automatic simply makes the performance of the GS more accessible." The other standard performance components of the Regal GS remain unchanged. Adding to the Regal GS' list of accomplishments, add being listed by WardsAuto to "10 Best Engines" and by Hagerty Insurance's "2012 Hot List', a list which predicts future collectible cars.
The next evolution of the Regal is the addition of eAssist to the base model. eAssist is a system which uses a compact lithium-ion battery pack and a small electric motor to aid the engine at low speeds and on inclines, two situations in which fuel economy can be compromised. The system will allow the Regal to reach economy levels of 36 mpg, which matches the Mini Cooper and beats other full sized cars luxury cars such as the Infiniti M35h. The Regal will still be available in both Regal Turbo and Regal GS.
