Tips for Getting the Most MPGs for Your Money

Last updated 5 years ago

Even after you drive away from your local Youngstown Chevy dealership in a reliable and fuel-efficient new Chevy, there are a number of things that you can and should do if you want to get the best gas mileage that your car can deliver. If you want to reduce the amount of gas you use and keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket, be sure to follow these gas mileage tips:

Drive Efficiently

Aggressive driving behavior, such as speeding, rapid acceleration, and rapid braking, can lower you vehicle’s fuel economy by as much as 33 percent. Also, be sure to remove excess weight from your Impala’s trunk or Sierra’s bed when possible. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your vehicle’s gas mileage by up to 2 percent.

Avoid Excessive Idling

Depending on engine size, air conditioning use, and the temperature outside, idling in your vehicle can waste a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour. Compared to idling, it only takes a few seconds worth of fuel to restart your vehicle. If you’re stuck in traffic or waiting to pick someone up and you can afford to go without the AC or heater, be sure to turn off your engine to conserve fuel.

Keep Tires Properly Inflated

Did you know that properly inflated tires can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3 percent? In addition to improving your fuel economy, properly inflated tires also improve overall vehicle safety, as underinflated tires are a greater risk for blowouts. To ensure that your tires aren’t robbing you of gas, check your tire pressure once a week.
