How General Motors is Going Green

Last updated 5 years ago

As one of the largest auto manufacturers in the world—and one of the oldest in the United States—General Motors knows that success in the automotive industry comes from innovative automotive technology and quality products.  GM is committed to leading the way in environmental technology and redefining the boundaries of fuel efficiency.  Consider just a few of the ways that GM is pioneering “green” technology throughout the automotive industry.

  • Better Automobiles

Everyone has different needs from their automobiles, which is why GM is constantly pursuing better fuel efficiency and a variety of alternative fuel technologies.  In the 2010 model year, 13 models throughout the Chevy, Buick, GMC, and other lineups managed to secure a 30-mpg highway rating or higher.  Newer models only continue to improve, with several hybrid vehicles and the revolutionary Chevy Volt, which was named the 2011 North American Car of the Year and the No. 1 hybrid vehicle of the year in the U.S. News Rankings.

  • Environmental Production

To pursue its philosophy of sustainable manufacturing, GM has taken several measures to cut down on its environmental impact by taking advantage of renewable energy sources, reducing its waste, and recycling its byproducts.  Between 2005 and 2009, GM has managed to reduce their global energy usage by more than 40 percent, their CO2 emissions by 39 percent, their water usage by 35 percent, and make more than half of their 76 Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac facilities landfill-free.

  • Technological Innovations

Working in collaboration with LG, GM is pursuing newer, more efficient battery designs to improve range and performance while decreasing recharge times. With plans to expand on their success with the Chevrolet Volt, GM is committed to integrating the next generation of batteries in Chevy, Buick, and GMC products.
